The church stands in the “Sítio da Igreja” (Church Site), in the center of Carreiras, a small village in the municipality of Portalegre. The building borders a tree-lined square, where the open space and deciduous trees create a tranquil atmosphere.

Situated on a slight plateau relative to the surrounding streets, the church offers a broad perspective over the white rooftops of the village and the gentle contours of the Alentejo interior.

Origin and History

Known as the Church of São Sebastião (Saint Sebastian), this parish church dates back to the 17th-18th centuries, resulting from successive enlargements during the Baroque period. Over the centuries, it has maintained its function as a community gathering point and liturgical celebration space, preserving traces of local devotion to the saint martyr.

A discreet stone plaque, near the south side, commemorates restoration interventions carried out in the mid-20th century, highlighting the care taken to maintain the original design.

Aesthetics and Architecture

Its simple volume is distinguished by the white facade, limewashed, flanked by quoins and a cornice finish in terracotta tones. The rectangular granite stone portal is framed by a molding and crowned by a tile panel depicting Saint Sebastian.

In the churchyard, the small bell tower, with a single arch, contrasts with the sky, while the gable roof features a stone eaves resting on traditional tiles.

Atmosphere and Panorama

Upon exiting, the square allows observation of the play of light and shadow on the facade, especially in the late afternoon, when the dim sun highlights the intense white and ochre contours. The surrounding area invites brief moments of contemplation and photographic records of the temple and its surroundings.

The ensemble serves as a landmark along the route through the parish, offering a moment of aesthetic pause before venturing further into the cobbled streets of Carreiras.
