A Spacious Temple
- The Main Church is a spacious temple with two naves.
- Its architecture is simple and of a popular style.
- The main body, probably from the 16th century, has four round masonry arches and a semi-circular vault.
- The High Altar is richly carved in the Baroque style of the 17th century.
- Three 16th-century tombs are located in front of the High Altar.
- The tomb on the right belongs to António de Azambuja, a notable navigator of the time.
- In the second chapel to the right of the Epistle, there is an underground tomb dated 1653, belonging to Frei Gaspar Ribeiro de Simas and his wife, D. Francisca de Siqueira.
- Frei Gaspar Ribeiro de Simas played an active role in the Restoration War between 1641 and 1646.
- He was appointed Captain-Major of Cabeço de Vide and Alter Pedroso in 1649.
- He was also a professed knight of the Order of Avis in 1649.
- Between 1607 and 1656, he was Provider of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Cabeço de Vide.
- The connection of the Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Candeias to the Order of Avis is evident in the heraldry of the Order of Avis existing in the temple.
- You can observe these symbols in the sacristy and the first side chapel on the epistle side.
