The Mother Church of Ouguela is located in the village of Ouguela, in the municipality of Campo Maior. This locality, characterized by its historical layout, offers an environment that transports the visitor to past eras. One of the most distinctive aspects of the church is its intimate connection with the old Ouguela fortress, as one of its bell towers singularly integrates into the castle walls, evidencing an architectural fusion between the sacred and the defensive.
The Mother Church of Ouguela is an example of Baroque architecture, exhibiting a design that reflects stylistic evolution throughout the centuries. Its construction and the modifications it underwent over time tell the history of the local community and its faith. The peculiarity of its bell tower merging with the old castle defenses underscores the strategic role and historical longevity of the complex, which dates back centuries of occupation and transformation.
Upon entering the church, the visitor finds a single-nave space that leads the eye to the chancel. Inside, details such as the baptismal chapel, located on the Gospel side, and the pulpit, accompanied by a masonry altar on the Epistle side, invite close observation. These elements, arranged according to religious tradition, contribute to the serene atmosphere and allow for appreciation of the organization and details of the local sacred art.
