The Mother Church of Belver is located in the village of Belver, in the municipality of Gavião, situated in the area known as Bairro Tropa. Its presence marks a landmark in the local urban landscape, being well integrated into the village community and accessible to visitors.
Built in the 16th century, the Mother Church of Belver is an example of the religious architecture of the time, bearing witness to centuries of history. Over time, the original structure underwent some modifications and enrichments that adapted it to various periods. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Visitation, evoking a Marian devotion with deep roots in local tradition.
Inside the building, one can appreciate artistic elements of considerable value. A painting panel stands out in the Altar of Souls, depicting Saint Michael in Purgatory, a work attributed to Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho, an important name in Portuguese art of his time. On the high altar, there is also another painting, unsigned, but which some specialists consider to be by the same author, enriching the artistic heritage present in the church.
