Situated in the heart of Alter do Chão, in its historic center, this architectural complex is located in one of the central squares of the village. Its position allows visitors to easily find it while exploring the oldest and most charming streets of the locality, offering a point of interest that reflects the essence of the local heritage.
The Church and Former Misericordia Hospital represents an important legacy of charity and devotion in Alter do Chão. This multifunctional building, which housed a brotherhood with welfare functions, has been a pillar for the community throughout the centuries. Although the original structure of the church has undergone transformations, it is its chancel that remains today, testifying to its importance and permanence over time. The building of the former hospital, adjacent to the chapel, evokes the dual vocation of care and faith that these institutions historically performed.
The built complex reveals the striking influence of the Baroque and Rococo styles, evident in the architectural and decorative details of what remains of the church. Inside the chancel, its main altarpiece stands out. Carved in marble and featuring an elegant convex form, this artistic element is one of the focal points of the space. The altarpiece also includes a tribune, adding complexity and visual richness to the composition, and the chancel itself features a perfect round triumphal arch, which harmoniously frames the ensemble.
