The Church of Caia is located in the serene area of Monte da Freguesia, within the locality of Caia, belonging to the municipality of Elvas in the district of Portalegre. Situated in a quieter part of this town, its presence contributes to the cultural and historical richness of its surroundings, maintaining an intrinsic connection to the life and legacy of Elvas.
Its location in Caia offers a unique perspective on the evolution of the region's heritage and identity, inviting a more contemplative visit, away from the more centralized hustle and bustle.
The roots of the Church of Caia date back to the 13th century, making it one of the oldest buildings in the Elvas area, founded shortly after the reconquest of the city from the Moors in 1226. In medieval times, this church played a significant role as the seat of a commandery of the Order of Christ.
Over the centuries, the church underwent profound transformations, although its essence and some original elements have endured. An inscription on the pediment's cross, "ERECTED 1227. REBUILT 1877.", attests to its longevity and the interventions that have shaped it to the present day.
Despite multiple renovations over the centuries, the main portal of the Church of Caia is one of its most notable and oldest features. Dating from its founding period, this granite portal displays a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic, with pointed arches and three archivolts resting on carefully sculpted capitals with nature-inspired motifs.
The façade, restored on several occasions, features a counter-curved pediment and a small, flat-lintel window. On its south side, traces of the base of a former bell tower can still be seen. Inside, the church reveals a three-nave structure separated by pointed arches, a feature dating back to a 15th-century Gothic renovation. The crossing, covered by a dome with a lantern, is notable for its stucco work that blends Renaissance and Mannerist elements, created between the 16th and 17th centuries. The ensemble is completed by several altars, a pulpit, and a baptistery adorned with 18th-century azulejo tiles. The bell tower, rising at the rear, is crowned by a conical dome, consolidating the building's distinctive character.
