The Church of Santiago Maior is located on a mid-slope area, in Quinta do Brejo, Castelo de Vide. Its position, isolated along the Carreira de Santiago and with its main facade facing the Circunvalação Road, offers a broad and unique perspective. The site functions as a true natural viewpoint, from where one can see the imposing Serra de São Paulo, also known as Serra da Senhora da Penha, to the west.
This peaceful, open, and picturesque environment is complemented by a fountain attached to its south side facade, contributing to the serene and inviting atmosphere of the surrounding area.
The history of the Church of Santiago Maior dates back to the early 16th century, with its foundation recorded around 1500 and initial construction developed in the first half of that century. In 1574, the church became part of the royal patronage, thus linking it to the Diocese of Guarda. Over the centuries, the temple underwent repairs and embellishments, particularly in the 17th century, a period when much of its interior decoration was carried out and elements such as the main altar and the stonework of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Incarnation were added.
Recognizing its historical and artistic value, the Church of Santiago Maior was classified as a Monument of Public Interest, a status that safeguards its importance in national heritage and includes it in the Serra de São Mamede Protected Area.
This parish church features religious architecture that combines Baroque elements with the so-called chão style, characterized by its simplicity and functionality. The longitudinal plan develops into a single nave, complemented by side chapels, a sacristy, and a quadrangular bell tower attached to the southwest. The building's volumes are stepped, with a predominance of horizontally arranged masses, giving it a harmonious profile within the landscape.
The main facade, facing south, is marked by a straight lintel door with a granite stonework frame, adorned above by pinnacles, a scallop shell, and a cross. The bell tower, with two registers, culminates in an octagonal pyramid between pinnacles. On the south facade, the slope of the terrain is accompanied by a stepped plinth, and a noteworthy detail is the presence of a backrest fountain attached to the wall.
The interior of the Church of Santiago Maior reveals remarkable ornamental richness, particularly the entirety of the wall covering of the nave, chancel, and the Chapel of Saint Anthony with 17th-century tiles. These patterned tiles, with vegetal and geometric motifs in shades of yellow, blue, and white, create an enveloping atmosphere of great aesthetic beauty. The nave ceiling, in masseira, displays exposed exotic wood framing.
In the interior space, various chapels open through granite stonework arches, with particular emphasis on the Chapel of Saint Anthony, featuring its baptismal font and a granite sepulchral slab. The chancel, slightly elevated and with ogival rib vaulting, houses a main altarpiece in carved wood with three registers, with niches accommodating sculptures and painted panels. It is curious to note the slight irregularity in the chancel's layout, which is misaligned in relation to the triumphal arch, a detail that may indicate a structural alteration that occurred throughout the building's history.
