Located in the heart of Alpalhão, in the municipality of Nisa, this church is integrated into the urban fabric of the village, situated in a plain environment. Its main facade, facing south, opens onto a cobbled street, harmoniously blending into the local architectural landscape and inviting exploration of its surroundings.
The Church of Santa Casa da Misericórdia, also known as the Church of the Holy Spirit, is a testament to architectural evolution over the centuries. Its history likely dates back to 1511, a date inscribed on a tombstone on the bell tower facade, suggesting its 16th-century origins. Over time, the church was enriched with elements from different eras, resulting in a remarkable fusion of styles. The triumphal arch, for instance, exhibits a distinctly medieval character, while the chancel displays a rib vault with details reminiscent of the Manueline style. In the second half of the 18th century, the stone portal, with its curvilinear frame and large window, added a touch of the Pombaline style.
The building's structure reflects the religious and vernacular architecture of the region, featuring a single nave and distinct roofs that define its volumes. Important conservation and restoration works were carried out at the end of the 20th century, including the replacement of the nave's roof, which maintained its original shape, characteristic of traditional local construction.
Observing the exterior, its quoins, pilasters, and cornices stand out, painted in a yellow hue that contrasts with the walls' plasterwork. The bell tower, with its four eyelets and a bulbous dome, is a striking feature. Inside, the nave features a two-tiered wooden ceiling, with visible beams and joists, lending a welcoming and authentic atmosphere. The chancel is covered by an elegant rib vault, whose keystone bears the Cross of the Order of Christ, a detail of great historical symbolism.
The set of Mannerist altarpieces, with their gilded and polychrome carving, captures attention. On the side altars, one can admire carved columns and painted panels depicting figures of saints and scenes from the Life of Christ. In the main altarpiece, the central niche houses a stone image of the Holy Trinity, still with traces of its original polychromy. The altar is enhanced by patterned blue and white tiles, and the chancel floor preserves a marble slab tombstone with a coat of arms, bearing witness to ancient lineages. In the sacristy, a granite washbasin dated 1759 adds another element of historical interest.
Founded as a confraternity or brotherhood church, the Church of Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Alpalhão played a central role in the religious and social life of the community over the centuries. Its initial use as a place of worship and fellowship reflects the importance of the Misericórdias (Holy Houses of Mercy) in Portuguese history. Although its current function is that of a mortuary chapel, the building continues to be a place of memory and significance for the population of Alpalhão, preserving its essence and its historical and artistic heritage for present and future generations.
