Fonte nova is located in the Ribeira das Vinhas area, north of the village of Galveias, in the municipality of Ponte de Sor. It is situated next to the ER244 road, in a clearing surrounded by cork oaks and pine trees.

The site offers an open space, with an unpaved ground and direct access to the road, making it possible to approach the water spring while enjoying the rural surroundings.

Origin and meaning

Erected in white-painted concrete, Fonte nova keeps alive the tradition of fountains that marked ancient stopping points for travelers and animals. The simple and functional metal spout recalls the importance of water in the agricultural and pastoral life of this Alentejo region.

The name “Fonte nova” suggests a renewal of this communal heritage, a landmark that gathers memories of journeys and of those who paused here.

Aesthetics and environment

The structure is in the shape of a triangular prism, with the inscription Fonte nova emblazoned on the front face. Water flows from a metal outlet, running into a shallow tank embedded in the ground.

Around it, the contrast between the luminous white of the fountain and the dark green of the trees creates a harmonious visual composition. The open sky and the winding path complete a tranquil landscape, perfect for brief stops and photographic records.
