The Chapel of Saint John is located in the village of Galveias, integrated into the municipality of Ponte de Sor. It is situated on Rua de São João (Saint John Street), thus being embedded within the urban fabric of the settlement. Its location allows visitors to the chapel to feel part of the tranquil village atmosphere, accessible from the surrounding streets.
The history of the Chapel of Saint John dates back to the 16th century, when it would have had its first origins. Over time, the building was subjected to various interventions and reconstructions. Although the current structure appears to date predominantly from the 17th century, the site underwent phases of renovation in subsequent centuries, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, adapting and maintaining its religious function within the community.
Despite its modest exterior appearance, the Chapel of Saint John holds interesting elements within its interior. One of the highlights is the vault that covers the chancel area, an architectural detail that lends dignity to the main space. The interior also houses the image of the patron saint, Saint John, who gives the chapel its name. Additionally, there was a significant set of mural paintings inside, which bestowed great visual richness upon the space, although currently their condition does not allow for their full enjoyment.
