This small chapel is located in the village of Fronteira, in the heart of Alentejo. It is integrated into the local urban environment, serving as a peaceful landmark for those walking through the village streets.
The origins of this chapel are linked to a brotherhood of the same name, although the exact date of its first construction is unknown. The building we see today resulted from a significant reconstruction at the beginning of the 20th century. This work was made possible by the generosity of José Máximo de Brito e Castro and his wife, D. Mariana Fernandes de Brito e Castro, and was completed in 1916.
The chapel's name, Senhor das Almas (Lord of Souls), indicates its connection to a particular devotion. Traditionally, these chapels were dedicated to the memory and suffrage of souls, reflecting an important dimension of Portuguese popular religiosity throughout the centuries. Its construction by a brotherhood of the same name underlines this strong root in the community and the practice of faith.
