Monument to the Fighters

Category: Civil Architecture > Memorial

District: Portalegre > Elvas > Elvas > Bairro da Fonte Nova

Location

The Monument to the Combatants is located in Elvas, specifically in Largo dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra. This square is situated in the Bairro da Fonte Nova, an urban area that offers a more tranquil environment, outside the city's busier historic center. Its location invites a reflective pause within the context of an ordinary urban setting.

Historical Memory

This monument was erected in 1938 with a solemn purpose: to honor the inhabitants of the municipality of Elvas who lost their lives during the First World War. Its creation reflects the desire to perpetuate the memory of those who fought in this global conflict, a significant period in 20th-century history. The chosen location for its construction also holds historical significance, as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of Peace) once stood there.

Conception and Symbolism

The monument's structure is topped by a Cross of Christ, one of Portugal's most recognizable symbols, which incorporates the Portuguese Shield at its crossing point. At the base, a marble plaque, adorned with cord motifs, displays a significant inscription. Above this, the coat of arms of the city of Elvas is prominent. The main inscription, engraved for posterity, reads: “To perpetuate the glorious memory of the dead of the Great War natives of the municipality of Elvas 1914-1918”. This message reinforces the monument's tribute character.
