The Alfarofia Lake is located in the Caia, São Pedro e Alcáçova area, in the municipality of Elvas. This area, on the outskirts of the historic city, presents a predominantly rural and tranquil Alentejo landscape. Access to the lake is discreetly integrated into the natural surroundings, offering a serene refuge for those seeking the calm of the countryside.
The history of Alfarofia Lake dates back to April 1992, when it was initially constructed for the purpose of agricultural irrigation in the region. A few months later, in July of the same year, the lake was stocked with common carp and largemouth bass juveniles, marking the beginning of its aquatic life. However, it was from the end of 2007 that the site gained a new vocation, transforming into a reference point for sport fishing, particularly carp fishing.
With an area of six hectares and a depth ranging from three to six meters, Alfarofia Lake stands out for the excellent quality of its water. This factor is ensured by a continuous process of water renewal, which allows for optimal oxygenation and maintains a stable water level for a large part of the year. The lake also hosts a vast expanse of cattails, approximately seven thousand square meters, which contribute to the natural filtration of the water and serve as an essential habitat for aquatic fauna. The abundant presence of freshwater crayfish is fundamental for the fish's diet, while predatory species such as largemouth bass and zander help maintain the population balance of carp and other fish.
Since its adaptation for fishing in 2007, Alfarofia Lake has consolidated itself as one of the most sought-after destinations for sport carp fishing enthusiasts in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. The location is known for the possibility of catching large carp, with records of specimens reaching twenty-five kilograms. Fishing practices here follow the catch-and-release principle, with care taken to apply an antiseptic to the fish before their release, ensuring the well-being of the species and the sustainability of fishing.
In addition to its importance for fishing, Alfarofia Lake is also a place of interest for birdwatching. The diversity of its ecosystem attracts various aquatic and terrestrial species, including some rare and beautiful ones, such as the Black Ibis and the Common Kingfisher. To facilitate their observation and photography, there is a floating observation post, allowing visitors to appreciate the birdlife in a peaceful environment conducive to their natural observation.
