The Church of Nossa Senhora das Dores (Our Lady of Sorrows) is located within the Historic Center of Elvas, situated in the lowest part of the city, inside the walls that define the heart of the urban area. Its position grants it a traditional ambiance and a setting that reflects the architectural essence of old Elvas.
This temple began construction in 1780, with its edifice being completed in 1796. It stands on the site where, previously, a church dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene existed. The work was designed by the architect Luís José Franco, also known as "o Santinho" (the Little Saint), who left his mark on local religious architecture.
Featuring a characteristic Rococo style, the church boasts a longitudinal plan, which incorporates a main nave, the chancel, and the sacristy. Inside, the attention given to decorative details is notable. The four side altars, for example, were painted to imitate marble, and the space is enriched by a variety of masonry work. These elements, ranging from secular themes to religious emblems, contribute to the temple's visual richness.
Next to the Church of Nossa Senhora das Dores, in a space that served as an annexed yard, once stood the old cemetery of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy). This site functioned as a necropolis from the 16th century until the mid-19th century, specifically until 1845. The presence of this old cemetery next to the temple offers a glimpse into the practices and history of the community throughout the centuries. The devotion to Nossa Senhora das Dores, or "Mater Dolorosa", widespread in various regions, saw significant development from the 11th century onwards, reinforcing the symbolism and importance of this place of worship.
