Located in Elvas, in the Rui de Mello Quarter, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição boasts a unique location. The building is erected over the Porta da Esquina (Corner Gate) of the city's ancient 17th-century wall, a detail that directly integrates it into Elvas' defensive and historical context. This position gives it a distinctive urban setting, visible to anyone exploring the town's streets.
The construction of this church dates back to the 17th century, a period when Elvas was consolidating its robust defenses. Its original purpose was intrinsically linked to the fortification, having been erected with the aim of invoking divine protection for the wall itself and for the city. Thus, this space served not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of faith and hope in the safeguarding of the community, a spiritual pillar for the military defenses of the time.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone several transformations that have enriched its architectural and artistic expression. One of its most striking features is the extensive use of azulejo tilework, especially visible in its interior. This cladding, dating from the 18th century, is a remarkable example of Dutch influence on Portuguese tile art, displaying a wide variety of patterns, from floral motifs, such as baskets (açafates), to heraldic elements representing the Portuguese coat of arms. On the facade, a tile panel was added in 1867, a tribute to Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which complements the overall aesthetic of the building and invites closer observation.
