The Dr. Santa Clara Arch is located in the city of Elvas, in the Rui de Mello neighborhood area, nestled in the heart of its historic center. This architectural element is harmoniously integrated into the surrounding houses, situated in Largo do Dr. Santa Clara. It serves as a passage connecting the highest point of this square to Travessa da Alcáçova, offering a glimpse into the city's secular urban structure. Its position, within the ancient walls of the fortress-city, highlights the historical richness of the area.
Built in the 19th century, the Dr. Santa Clara Arch presents itself as a commemorative architectural piece with a romantic and scenic character. Its distinctive "L"-shaped structure is composed of two quadrangular turrets that connect to a section of the wall. This design gives the arch a solid appearance and a striking presence in the urban fabric, contributing to the unique atmosphere of that part of Elvas.
Also known as "Arco da Porta do Tempre" or "Arco do Tempra," this construction was erected to evoke a legendary episode in the history of Elvas. It refers to a supposed battle between the Moors and the Knights Templar, during which a breach was said to have been opened in the city's first Arab wall, allowing troops to enter the city. The arch thus serves as a memorial to this narrative that endures in local memory, inviting reflection on the layers of time that have shaped Elvas. It is believed that the original Arab gate, to which the arch connects, may still be visible in an adjacent courtyard, behind an iron gate.
