The Moorish Bridge of Ribeira de Seda is located in the town of Crato, integrated into the Pêro Filho neighborhood. Its position is notable for being built directly over the course of the Ribeira de Seda. Being next to this bridge means finding oneself at a point where urbanization approaches the stream's bank, in a setting that combines human presence with the surrounding natural landscape.
This bridge is an authentic stone history book. Although traces and a possible origin date are associated with the Roman presence in the region, perhaps in the 3rd century, the structure we see today is the result of transformations over time. Observing its construction, it becomes evident that it underwent significant reconstruction during the Middle Ages, which gives it a composite character and bears witness to different periods of local evolution.
The bridge's architecture reveals interesting details for those who observe it carefully. It is composed of seven arches that rise over the stream, defining its silhouette above the water. At the base, facing upstream, four triangular cutwaters stand out. The very way the stones fit together, with some visible irregularity in the deck and spans, confirms the interventions and reconstructions the bridge has undergone over the centuries.
The location of the Moorish Bridge, over the Ribeira de Seda, creates a unique atmosphere. The proximity of the water, the sound it makes as it flows, and the vegetation growing on its banks complement the presence of this ancient construction. It is a place that invites a pause, allowing one to appreciate the connection between human work and the natural course of the stream.
