The Cine-Teatro of Elvas is located in the heart of the city's Historic Centre, in a central and easily accessible area. It is situated in Largo Primeiro de Dezembro, a square that serves as a landmark within Elvas's walled area. Its location allows visitors to enjoy the city's historic ambiance, being integrated into the urban fabric that characterises this heritage.
This building, dedicated to performing arts and cinema, was inaugurated on April 28, 1930. The architectural project was authored by Jorge Coutinho, and it is particularly interesting to note that the Cine-Teatro was erected on the site where the Convento das Domínicas (Dominican Convent) previously stood. This superposition of eras and functions lends the space an additional layer of history, transforming a former place of cloister into a vibrant 20th-century cultural centre.
After a period during which it was deactivated and in disrepair, the Cine-Teatro of Elvas underwent significant investment in rehabilitation and modernisation. This intervention allowed not only for the recovery of the building's structure but also for its equipping with the necessary infrastructure for visitor comfort and the quality of performances. Currently, with a capacity of 320 seats, it serves as the main stage for a wide range of cultural events, from theatre to dance, music, and poetry, playing an active role in the city's cultural life.
