The Municipal Museum of Avis, known as the Museum of the Alentejo Countryside, is located in the Old Convent of São Bento de Avis, an imposing building on top of a hill.
The convent has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1949.
The museum houses a collection of artifacts related to ethnography, archeology, and crafts, collected by municipal employees, local artisans, and residents.
Open from Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, as well as on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. Closed on Sundays, Mondays, national and municipal holidays, and on days of tolerance.
The museum originated from a free time occupation project carried out by young people from the municipality in the summers of 1982-84, who collected ethnographic pieces from local parishes.
In 2004, the museum reopened to the public with exhibitions in tribute to the local painter Ângelo Paciência.
