The Avis Archaeology Centre is located in the heart of the village's Historic Centre, in an area that evokes its rich heritage. It occupies one of the former dependencies of the Monastic Complex of São Bento de Avis, a building of remarkable historical and architectural value. Its presence revitalises this area, inviting visitors to wander through streets and buildings that bear witness to Avis's long history.
Since 2011, the Avis Archaeology Centre has served as a hub for the study and dissemination of local and regional archaeology. In this space, findings from excavations within the municipality are carefully processed, studied, and conserved. This allows for a deeper understanding of the various eras that shaped this landscape and the communities that inhabited it, revealing aspects of the past that would otherwise remain unknown.
The Centre is housed in a part of the Monastic Complex of São Bento de Avis, classified as a Property of Public Interest. The refurbishment of this space sought to preserve its original design while adapting it to the modern functions of an archaeological research centre. Thus, a visit to the Centre offers not only a window into the archaeological heritage but also an opportunity to appreciate the architecture of a historic monument that, by itself, tells a significant part of Avis's history.
