Located in the upper part of the village, near the castle, the Porta da Vila (Village Gate) functions as a pivotal point in the historic urban fabric. From this spot, on the hillside, narrow streets and cobbled paths wind downhill, marking the beginning of the area that extends towards the east.
The Porta da Vila is an element rooted in the medieval structure of the settlement. It probably constituted the main access point connecting the fortified area of the castle to the area that began to develop on the hillside, having been particularly relevant during the period when the Jewish community settled and prospered in this zone. It served as a fundamental portal for transit between the fortress and the exterior, shaping how the village grew from its defensive core.
Today, the Porta da Vila maintains its significance as a portal, serving as an excellent starting point for exploring the historic quarter that extends down the hillside. It is the threshold that invites visitors to descend through the narrow streets, allowing them to feel the transition between the castle area and the intricate tangle of medieval alleys that unfolds to lower areas of the village, preserving the memory of its ancient essential connecting function.
