The church is located on Rua de São Vicente, set within a walled square formed by the bifurcation of urban roads. This space in front of the church features a granite-paved churchyard, accessible via stairs. Its isolated position in the square gives it prominence in the surrounding urban landscape.
Although the main construction observed today dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, the history of this site as a religious center dates back to more ancient times. There are references to a parish dedicated to Saint Vincent as early as the 6th century, and a tombstone found in the subsoil points to burials dating from 618. Inscriptions on the current building indicate that it was rebuilt in the mid-16th century and re-founded in the late 17th century, marking the beginning of its Baroque form as a parish church.
The building stands as a remarkable example of religious Baroque architecture. Its main façade is particularly expressive, with abundant granite ornamentation that evokes the work of carving. Pilasters, cornices, and pinnacles define the structure, while a niche with the image of the patron saint dominates the upper part. The main portal, flanked by large windows, is enhanced by a broken pediment and decorative elements such as cartouches and figures. The bell tower, integrated into the complex, completes the image of this church.
Inside, the rich Baroque decoration is notably manifested. The walls of the nave and chancel are covered with extensive panels of blue and white historic tilework (azulejos), depicting episodes from the life and martyrdom of Saint Vincent. Giltwood carving (talha dourada) dominates the altarpieces of the side chapels and, in an especially sumptuous manner, the main altarpiece and the triumphal arch, conferring an atmosphere of great impressiveness. The high choir and pulpits are other elaborate elements that enrich the space.
The construction and decoration of the church involved some of the most prominent names in Baroque art in the northern region of Portugal, including architects, master builders, carvers, and painters. The complexity and dynamism of its façade, combined with the opulence of the interiors in giltwood carving and tilework, make this church a recognized and important example of local Baroque architecture.
