This historic complex, once a convent and now a church, is located in the heart of Castelo de Vide, within the historic area of Santiago Maior. It lies within the ancient walled limits of the castle, accessible via picturesque streets such as Rua Direita do Castelo and near the D. Dinis and São Pedro Gates.
Its position in the upper part of the town, next to the castle, allows for natural integration into the defensive and historic environment of the site, while also benefiting from its proximity to the Serra de São Mamede Protected Area, whose surrounding landscape characterizes the region.
The history of this building dates back to the 17th century, with the church's construction in 1638. Initially associated with the Convent of Santa Catarina, the complex became known as the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Alegria. Throughout the 18th century, it underwent significant reforms that shaped its current appearance.
Although its original function as a convent has ended, the building remains an important place of worship, now serving as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Alegria or Church of the Castle. The presence of the Throne Room, which communicated with the ruined areas of the original convent, is an interesting vestige of its past monastic life.
The construction features a religious design with Baroque elements, visible both externally and internally. The main facade stands out for its large granite ashlar portal, topped by a perfect arch niche housing the image of the patron saint, flanked and framed by panels of polychrome patterned tiles.
Inside, the space is divided between the nave and the chancel, separated by a granite triumphal arch. The nave has a three-plane ceiling decorated with framed coffers. The chancel, elevated relative to the nave, is covered by a dome on pendentives. One of the most striking features is the full covering of the nave, chancel, and dome walls with polychrome patterned tiles, creating a visually rich and vibrant environment. The high altar, crafted in painted wood, centers on a niche with the image of Nossa Senhora da Alegria.
The recognition of the historical, architectural, and artistic importance of this site is reflected in its classification as a Monument of Public Interest. This classification underscores the cultural value of the built complex and its relevance within the heritage context of Castelo de Vide and the country.
The combination of its conventual origin, the characteristics of 17th and 18th-century religious architecture, and the remarkable interior tile decoration gives it particular significance for those exploring the built heritage of Alentejo.
