The Capela Senhor do Bonfim is located in the Quinta do Brejo area, slightly outside the historic center of Castelo de Vide. It is situated in a peri-urban environment, facing the national road. There is a wide square in front that allows access and observation of the main facade.
The construction of this chapel dates back to the 18th century. An inscription on the side facade attests that the first stone was laid in 1721. Over time, the building underwent works and additions, maintaining its religious function as a brotherhood church. The Capela Senhor do Bonfim is classified as a Public Interest Property, recognizing its heritage value.
Externally, the chapel displays a mix of Baroque and Rococo styles, characteristic of its construction period. The main facade stands out for its two lateral bell towers, each topped with a hexagonal pyramid. The portal and entrance window are decorated with typical Baroque elements, such as angel heads and volutes.
The interior of the chapel reveals remarkable decorative richness, where tile work, gilded carving, and painting harmoniously combine. The opulence of Rococo is visible in various elements, such as the curved shapes and shell motifs that adorn walls and ceilings. The ensemble creates a visually impactful environment for visitors.
The walls of the sub-choir and nave are covered in their lower part by an extensive wainscot of blue and white Baroque tiles. These figurative tiles are arranged in panels illustrating biblical episodes and figures, mostly related to the Life of Christ. They are a distinctive element and tell stories through decorated ceramics.
Gilded carving plays a central role in the interior decoration, particularly in the lateral altarpieces and the main altar, which features a central image of the Flagellated Christ and columns supported by atlantes. The vaults and ceilings are adorned with paintings and gilded stucco, displaying vegetal motifs, religious figures, and symbols of the Passion of Christ, such as the representation of the Transfiguration in the nave vault or the Holy Trinity at the keystone of the triumphal arch.
