The Cabroeira Waterfall is situated in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede, in an area integrated into the Cabroeira Stream valley. This location, just a few kilometers from the Spanish border, is characterized by a landscape of steep slopes and entrenched valleys. The geographical position of the waterfall offers a natural setting where the view extends over an area little altered by human action.
The main highlight of this place is the presence of a succession of waterfalls along the stream's course. Among them, one stands out for its height, reaching approximately 25 meters. Water, in its different forms and flows, constitutes the central element that gives identity and dynamism to this natural mountain scenery.
The area surrounding the waterfall is set within a rugged and natural landscape, with notable geomorphological characteristics. The deep valley and imposing slopes are shaped by specific rock formations, such as schists and quartzites. This particular geological configuration creates a natural viewpoint, from where it is possible to appreciate the valley's structure and the raw beauty of the mountainous terrain.
The area around the Cabroeira Waterfall possesses significant natural value, reflected in the richness of its habitats and biodiversity. It is a location of recognized importance for ornithology, currently serving as a nesting area for griffon vultures. Historically, the presence of other birds of prey, such as Bonelli's eagles, underscores the ecological relevance of this mountain refuge.
In addition to its natural attributes, the Cabroeira landscape bears marks of human presence throughout time. It is possible to find traces of rural constructions, ruins that bear witness to how humankind interacted with this territory, integrating activities and ways of life that left their mark on this predominantly wild area.
At the base of one of the waterfalls, a small natural lake forms. This spot offers an invitation to a moment of tranquility and contemplation. It is a point where one can more closely feel the force of the water and enjoy the refreshing environment created by the waterfall, an invitation for a brief contact with the liquid element.
