Located in the centre of the village of Crato, in the district of Portalegre, the Padre Belo House Museum is set within the tranquil and historic environment of this Alentejo locality. Its central position facilitates access and integration with the exploration of the village's urban fabric.
The Padre Belo House Museum was born from the generous initiative of the Reverend Father Francisco António Rosado Belo, a remarkable figure with a deep interest in history and art. Father Belo, who was also the first mayor of Crato Municipality after April 25th, dedicated years to building a vast art collection. His expressed will led to the donation of this valuable collection and the residence itself to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Crato.
This institution, recognizing the importance of the legacy and the cultural project it represented, took on the responsibility of adapting the building. The necessary conditions for the proper security and exhibition of the pieces were implemented, thus realizing Father Belo's vision.
The museum houses an impressive collection of religious art, particularly focused on the life of Jesus Christ, from his infancy to adolescence. This collection is notable for its size and specificity, comprising over nine hundred sculptures depicting these periods.
In addition to the sculptures, the collection also includes a large number of paintings, nativity scenes, and ceramic pieces, all related to the figure of Christ. It is recognized as one of the most significant collections of sacred art in the country, offering a rich and detailed perspective on Christian iconography.
With the creation of the Padre Belo House Museum, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Crato expanded its social action with an important cultural dimension. The space is conceived not only as a repository of art but also as a place that nurtures the spirit, reflecting Christian, humanist, and artistic values.
A visit to this museum offers an opportunity to contemplate a legacy of devotion and art, providing an experience of reflection on culture and faith through the works exhibited in this carefully prepared environment.
