Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Portalegre > Elvas > Elvas

Location

Situated in the heart of Elvas, in the area of São Vicente e Ventosa, the Chapel of the Martyrs is located in a central part of the city. Its urban setting offers visitors the opportunity to explore the historical atmosphere of Elvas, with its streets and buildings that bear witness to centuries of Alentejo life.

Historical Roots

The name “Chapel of the Martyrs” marks the profound memory of this place. Dating back to the 13th century, the site is known as the sepulchre of Christians who lost their lives during the reconquest of the city from the Moors. It was upon the foundations of a primitive hermitage, consecrated to Our Lady of the Martyrs, that King D. Afonso III ordered the construction of a Dominican convent in 1267, continuing the sacredness and historical significance of the space.

An Architectural Legacy

Throughout the centuries, the building that stands today on the site of the Chapel of the Martyrs has undergone various phases of construction and remodelling, reflecting the evolution of Portuguese architecture. Although the original Mendicant Gothic structure can still be glimpsed, especially in its apse, the space also incorporates notable additions. The façade was enriched with Baroque elements in the 17th century, and inside, the side chapels, added in the 18th century, dazzle with their marble details. Visitors can appreciate the beauty of the 18th-century tiles that narrate episodes of religious life, as well as the imposing organ and the unique dark wooden pulpit, which bear witness to the artistic richness accumulated over time.

Heritage Recognition

The historical and artistic relevance of the Chapel of the Martyrs is officially recognized by its classification as a National Monument. This distinction highlights the invaluable worth of the building in Portuguese heritage. Integrated into the border garrison town of Elvas, a site classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the chapel represents a fundamental piece in understanding the military and religious legacy of this region, inviting reflection on the resilience and faith that shaped the Alentejo.
