The chapel stands by a rural path on the outskirts of Alter do Chão, framed by agricultural land and scattered cork oaks. The open surroundings allow for glimpses of the flat horizon typical of Alto Alentejo, with the vast and clear sky framing the building.
Access is via a dirt track that stands out between low, loose stone walls. Nearby, a small, white ancillary annex is visible, highlighting the simplicity and functionality of the place.
This chapel, of traditional Alentejo design, preserves marks of the passage of time: the render is marked by the sun and rain, revealing the original wall texture. Although there are no precise sources regarding its foundation, the style suggests a rural construction from the 18th or 19th centuries, intended for community devotion.
At the centre of the façade's apex, a semicircular dome crowned by a stone cross stands, symbolising the permanence of faith throughout generations. The natural wear gives it a discreet air of authenticity.
The building features a simple, single-nave plan, painted white with an ochre-toned frieze and plinth. The access door, with a perfect arch, contrasts with the worn green of the wood, drawing the eye towards the interior.
Around it, the presence of some plants like agaves and isolated olive trees creates a serene setting. Under the strong sun, the shadows cast by power lines and nearby trunks lend dynamism to the space, offering a discreet yet evocative photographic spot.
