The Church of Mercy (Igreja da Misericórdia) is nestled in the heart of the historic center of Campo Maior. Its position is characteristic of Alentejo towns, set among narrow alleys and flanked by typical buildings, which makes it easily accessible on foot and provides an immersion into the local atmosphere.
This religious temple, one of the oldest in the town of Campo Maior, has its roots in the 16th century. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several interventions and transformations.
In the 18th century, in particular, it was the subject of major expansion and renovation works, which significantly shaped its current appearance, bearing witness to the different eras and needs of the local community.
The façade of the Church of Mercy features a harmonious simplicity, typical of many religious constructions in the region. It highlights a bell tower and a main doorway crafted from worked stone.
Above this entrance, an inscription engraved with the word "Misericordia" and the date "1755" marks one of the most relevant periods of intervention on its structure, adding a distinctive element to the architectural ensemble.
The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Visitation (Nossa Senhora da Visitação), a figure of central importance to the faith and community of Campo Maior.
It remains an active hub of local religious life today, playing a fundamental role in the celebrations and festivities that mark the town's calendar, underscoring its continued relevance to the faithful community.
