The Bandstand is located in the heart of Campo Maior's Municipal Garden, a green area situated in the urbanisation of São João Baptista. Its central position in the garden facilitates access and invites a pause, naturally integrating into the surrounding urban landscape and offering a visual reference point within this leisure space.
The Bandstand visible today was inaugurated in August 2009, but its presence in this location dates back to a predecessor. The original bandstand, built in the early 1970s, was constructed with the spontaneous collaboration of local artisans, such as blacksmiths and stonemasons, using local materials like hydraulic tiles, granite, and wrought iron. It was a meeting point, though smaller and with limited access, primarily used by the philharmonic band. The decision to build a new one aimed to overcome maintenance and space difficulties, ensuring that the spirit of the place was preserved by maintaining its location and choosing materials that reflected the previous design.
The current Bandstand was designed to maintain the memory of its predecessor, using an architectural language that evokes the original construction, but adapted to modern needs. With enlarged dimensions and equipped with access stairs, it offers a more functional and comfortable space. It serves as a stage for performances by the philharmonic band and for other cultural activities, contributing to the revitalisation of the Municipal Garden and providing a meeting point and place of enjoyment for the community and visitors. Its construction reflects a commitment to the continuity of Campo Maior's musical and social tradition.
