Calvary is located in the town of Alpalhão, in the municipality of Nisa. This place is situated on an elevation, once more isolated, which offers a wide perspective over the surroundings, becoming today a landmark and easily accessible point within Alpalhão's urban fabric.
At the heart of this space lies the Chapel of Calvary, a religious building dating back to the 18th century. Classified as a Property of Public Interest, this Baroque chapel was built with the purpose of serving as a pilgrimage site. Its architecture is marked by a main facade with a framed portico and a coat of arms at the center, as well as windows with iron balconies. Inside, the chapel reveals a single nave and features a magnificent main altarpiece made of stonework, whose carving imitates the delicacy of woodcarving. It is a testament to the art and faith of past eras.
Largo do Calvário underwent a profound transformation, evolving from a dirt area into a modern and well-maintained leisure park. This space was designed to offer various recreational activities, including a cycle path for rides and a padel court. Additionally, it features a semi-covered stage, intended to host local events and celebrations. The revitalization project carefully integrated decorative elements inspired by Alpalhão's traditional costumes, visible in details and in a unique gourd-shaped sculpture, which lend the park its own cultural identity and a welcoming atmosphere.
