The Church of São Pedro is located in the historical center of the city of Elvas, belonging to the parish of Caia, São Pedro e Alcáçova, in the district of Portalegre.
It is part of the complex of the Border Garrison Town of Elvas and its Fortifications, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Founded in the 13th century, after the reconquest of Elvas from the Moors in 1226, being one of the oldest churches in the city.
During the Middle Ages, the church was the headquarters of a commandery of the Order of Christ.
The original church portal, made of granite, is one of the oldest preserved elements, with characteristics that mix Romanesque and Gothic styles, standing out for its three archivolts and capitals sculpted with plant motifs.
The facade has undergone several interventions over the centuries, featuring a curved pediment and a small window above the portal. There are traces of an old bell tower, which has since disappeared. Above the cross on the pediment, there is an inscription that refers to its construction in 1227 and a restoration in 1877.
The church consists of three naves separated by Gothic arches, a characteristic of the reforms carried out in the 15th century.
The church's transept is covered by a dome with a lantern, decorated with classical Renaissance and Mannerist elements, dating from the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Inside, the altars, the pulpit, and the baptistery decorated with 18th-century tiles, probably from Nicolau de Frias' workshop, are also noteworthy.
The current bell tower is located at the rear of the church and is covered by a conical dome.
