Located in the heart of Alentejo, this place is set within a typically rural landscape, characteristic of the region. Its surroundings are marked by a scenery of gentle plains and vegetation that varies between forest and the banks of a watercourse, the Ribeira da Raia, which defines part of its natural environment.

The area is part of a territory that preserves natural values, recognized for its biodiversity and the presence of wooded areas, such as its famous pine forest. This environment invites a peaceful experience, immersed in the Alentejo tranquility.

An Ancient Origin

The history of the place dates back to ancient times. Archaeological findings, such as mosaics and fragments of Roman amphorae, reveal the presence of an ancient Roman occupation in the area, bearing witness to its importance throughout the centuries. It is believed that the name "Cabeção" is associated with the configuration of the terrain, marked by the existence of small elevations or "cabeços" in its vicinity.

Later, this territory was linked to the Order of Avis, which played a fundamental role in its foundation. Official recognition as a town occurred in the year 1578, by decree of King D. Sebastião, a milestone that highlighted the autonomy and strategic value of the location at the time.

Natural Heritage and Traditions

One of the most notable characteristics of Cabeção is its intrinsic connection to nature. Part of its territory is included in the Natura 2000 Network, a European recognition of the relevance of its natural habitats and the biological diversity found here.

The natural richness extends to areas such as the Cabeção National Forest, a historic pine forest whose usufruct was granted to the inhabitants by D. Sebastião. The banks of the Ribeira da Raia are equally significant, hosting a recognized sport fishing track. In addition to its natural value, the place keeps ancestral traditions alive, such as artisanal wine production in clay pots, a secular method that reflects the region's winemaking culture.
