The pillory was erected in 1519, after the town received a new charter from King Manuel I.
Before the construction of the pillory, the town's gallows were set up on Rua da Boavista, according to tradition.
The monument has a simple, cylindrical column, with a decorated top and ending in a small sphere.
It rests on three square, quite worn steps, and a circular base.
Between the capital and the finial, there are old cross-shaped irons with rings.
This pillory reflects the judicial history and autonomy of Barbacena, being a symbol of local power at the time.
