The Tower of São Roque is situated in the area with the same name, in the village of Avis. It is integrated into the town's urban environment, being easily visible when traversing this area.
This tower is an important remnant of Avis's defensive history. Originally, it was an integral part of the complex system of walls that protected the old Avis Castle. It served as one of the elements of surveillance and defense for the medieval fortress.
Over the centuries, many medieval constructions were altered or disappeared. The Tower of São Roque is one of the few original structures that have survived to this day, representing a part of what was the grand fortification of Avis.
