Avis Castle is located in the town of Avis, in the Portalegre district, Alentejo.
The castle is linked to the Military Order of Saint Benedict of Avis, which was fundamental in the defense and settlement of the region.
Human occupation of the area is very old, dating back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the megalithic remains found in the vicinity.
During the Reconquista, the lands were offered to the Militia of the Friars of Évora in 1211, on the condition that they build a castle. Between 1214 and 1223, the castle was erected, serving as the headquarters of the Order of Avis.
The town of Avis gained prominence from the reign of D. João I, Master of Avis, when the Order became directly linked to the Crown of Portugal.
After the extinction of religious orders in 1834, the castle lost importance. Much of its structure was sold or left to deteriorate, with only three towers of the original six still standing: the Torre de São Roque, the Torre de Santo António, and the Torre da Rainha.
What remains of the castle was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
The ruins of the castle and the surviving towers provide a view over the town and the surrounding landscape, being a point of interest for those who wish to explore the medieval history of the region.
