The main building was built in Manueline style from 1517, with features of a church-fortress. Its architecture includes Gothic and Renaissance elements, such as the main portal, designed by Miguel de Arruda.
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção was inaugurated for worship in 1537, despite the works still being incomplete. In 1570, it became the Cathedral of Elvas. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the interior was enriched with marble altars and gilded carvings, including an organ by Pascoal Caetano Oldovini.
The church was a point of prayer during the Restoration War, where soldiers and their families asked for protection for the military in battle.
In 2014, the old Cathedral was integrated into the "Military Tourism" project, which aims to promote historical sites linked to Portuguese military history.
Today, the church is a point of interest for those visiting Elvas, offering a dive into the history and religious and military heritage of the region.
