The Church of Santo António is located in the town of Arronches, specifically in the Santo António neighbourhood. Its location is strategic, close to the road connecting to Campo Maior, which makes it a visible landmark for those arriving or leaving the locality. This positioning gives the building a setting that highlights it within the urban landscape of the neighbourhood.
The history of the Church of Santo António in Arronches is unique, marked by a remarkable evolution of use. After the establishment of the Republic, the building ceased to have a religious function, being acquired by private individuals. Over time, the space adapted to secular needs, serving as a house and, surprisingly, also as an agricultural hayloft. This change of use reveals the building's adaptability to local dynamics and its integration into the daily life of the community over decades.
This old temple, with a single-nave structure, possesses architectural elements that deserve attention. Externally, a granite portal stands out, evidencing the robustness and characteristic workmanship of its construction period. Inside, although currently not in use for worship, the church was recognized for the presence of frescoes of remarkable quality on its walls, artistic details that testify to its religious past and the cultural and artistic value it once held.
In 2007, the Church of Santo António underwent restoration work. The main objective of these interventions was the consolidation of the old building's structure, ensuring its preservation. However, the restoration process, while strengthening the construction, is said to have altered aspects of its appearance, reportedly stripping it of some of its former beauty. Currently, the building has no use, including religious worship, remaining as a historical and cultural landmark in the heart of Arronches, inviting contemplation of its trajectory.
