Located in the town of Arronches, in the heart of the Alentejo, the Church of Misericórdia is situated in the Assunção area. Its location is unique within the town's urban context, visibly positioned next to the Mother Church, contributing to the historical landscape of Arronches' center.
This temple, with sober lines, dates back to the mid-16th century, marking its presence with an architecture that evokes the period. Its façade is enhanced by a stone-carved portico, which denotes 16th-century artistic mastery. Inside, a single nave features a ceiling of rib vaults, which in times past were adorned with elaborate paintings and frescoes.
Among the distinctive elements of its artistic collection, a polychrome and gilded marble side altar stands out, also from the 16th century, reflecting the aesthetics and devotion of that period. Externally, the bell tower stands out, with a quadrangular base and topped by a dome of unusual and cut-out design, giving it a distinctive silhouette.
Annexed to the temple is the building of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy), a 17th-century construction. This annex still retains its original balcony windows, where one can observe the primitive wrought-iron grilles, a detail that attests to its antiquity and the social function that developed there over the centuries. After a period of being without religious use, the church was reopened, regaining its role in community life and continuing to be a reference point for local history and faith.
