The Pedunculated Blocks of Arez-Alpalhão are located in the town of Alpalhão, part of the municipality of Nisa. This site is part of an area designated as the Arez-Alpalhão Pedunculated Blocks Geomonument.

Situated on the vast and characteristic Alto Alentejo Peneplain, these rock formations punctuate the landscape, standing out in their natural surroundings and inviting close observation of the terrain's shapes.

The Formation of These Rocks

The Pedunculated Blocks are singular geological formations, resembling enormous mushrooms made of granite. Their origin is the result of a natural process that unfolded over thousands of years, shaped by the action of water and time.

Initially, the granitic rock, after its exposure to the surface, underwent a more pronounced alteration in its lower layers, where groundwater accumulated, charged with substances that dissolved part of the granite. Subsequently, with the occurrence of intense rains and the consequent erosion of the surrounding soils, the most altered and fragile part was removed. This process revealed the narrower lower part, which can be called the peduncle, that supports the upper rock mass, giving them their very particular shape.

Unique Shapes in the Landscape

The presence of these granite blocks, with their narrow base and wider top, creates a visually striking landscape. They are like natural sculptures that emerge from the terrain, lending a distinctive character to the Alpalhão region and the Alto Alentejo scenery.
