This set of wooden walkways was built to allow safe access and contemplation of the riverside area and the wetlands near the river. It offers a tranquil route in direct contact with local nature.
The walkway is built on stilts, rising from the ground in areas that may be seasonally flooded or are ecologically sensitive. Its wooden structure blends into the landscape and allows for easy walking through terrain that would otherwise be difficult to cross.
Generally, this type of structure has a defined length, sometimes over one kilometre, connecting a starting point (usually near a residential centre or a car park) to the riverside or a point of interest. It is mostly flat, making it accessible to various people, including families and visitors with reduced mobility (although it is always good to check specific on-site conditions).
While walking along the walkway, enjoy the views over the alluvial plain, the characteristic vegetation of marshland or riverbank areas and, of course, the presence of the Tagus River. It is a suitable place for observing water birds and other fauna associated with this type of habitat.
The walkway leads to the area known as Barca da Amieira, an old crossing point or access to the river. It is a place to rest, appreciate the vastness of the river, and sometimes find traces of riverside activities or nautical leisure.
The best way to enjoy the walkway is to walk unhurriedly, observing the details of nature. Wear comfortable footwear. Bring water, especially on hot days. Respect the environment, do not leave litter and do not stray from the walkway's path to protect local vegetation and fauna. It is a great walk for any time of year, but colours and bird presence may vary with the seasons.
