The Church of Santo António is located in a quiet and serene area, on the outskirts of Alter do Chão. Situated in a peri-urban zone, it is surrounded by an olive grove that contributes to its isolated and calm atmosphere, a contrast to the village center. Its position, to the northwest of the locality, offers a natural setting that invites a moment of quietude.
Access to the site is via the continuation of Rua da Trincheira, about 600 to 700 meters from the urban core, on an elevation that was once known as "Cabeço do Alcaide". This elevated location provides the space with a distinct environment and the freshness of the Alentejo air.
The Church of Santo António has a history dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, having been originally built to house the Capuchin Franciscan friars. Its foundation, which began with the laying of the first stone in 1617 by Teodósio II himself, Duke of Braganza, and the second by his son, the future D. João IV, denotes the importance and support of the House of Braganza in its construction.
Over the centuries, the building underwent some modifications, notably in the 18th century, with the addition of a side chapel in 1784. The Church of Santo António is today recognized as a Property of Public Interest, a testament to its heritage value and its historical relevance for the Alter do Chão region.
The interior of the Church of Santo António, with a single nave, reveals artistic elements of great interest. Noteworthy are its azulejos that cover the walls of the main chapel, with proto-Baroque patterns in blue and yellow tones, creating a distinct atmosphere. The ribbed vault of the main chapel is particularly remarkable, adorned with paintings that include vegetal elements, angels, and cherubs, reflecting the style and sensibility of the era.
In addition to the azulejos and paintings, the space features painted and carved wooden works, enriching its decoration. It is also possible to observe various stone and wooden sculptures, as well as heraldic tombs from the 17th and 18th centuries, which offer a glimpse into the personalities and families that marked the history of this place of worship and contemplation.
