Fountain located in Praça da República, in the village of Alter do Chão, in the municipality of Alter do Chão, District of Portalegre, Alentejo.
Built in 1556 by Teodósio I, Duke of Bragança. Initially, it was located in another point of the square, being transferred to its current location in the 17th century. Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1974.
It presents a Renaissance style. It has a double dome-shaped structure, supported by three columns made of Estremoz marble.
The interior of the fountain is adorned with heraldic medallions of the Dukes of Bragança and the Arms of Portugal, in addition to the symbol of the Village of Alter. The spouts and the tank do not belong to the original construction.
An important historical and cultural point, ideal for photographs and appreciation of local architecture. A place that highlights the heritage of the Alentejo and offers a relaxing break in the visit to the village.
