Alter Pedroso Castle, or what remains of it, stands imposingly on a dominant hill in the locality of Alter Pedroso, in the municipality of Alter do Chão, Portalegre district. Its elevated position offers a privileged perspective over the vast surrounding Alentejo landscape, with its open fields and wide horizons. This defensive site was strategically positioned to control the region's paths and passages, today offering an unobstructed view that stretches for miles.
The history of Alter Pedroso's fortifications is intrinsically linked to the defense of the border and the consolidation of Portuguese territory, especially during the Christian Reconquest. Although older traces suggest a previous occupation, its military relevance intensified in the Middle Ages. This castle was an integral part of a crucial defensive line in Alentejo, under the purview of the Order of Avis, playing a fundamental role in controlling and protecting the lands. Its structures tell the story of centuries of battles and a continuous and strategic human presence.
Of the once imposing Alter Pedroso Castle, today mainly its vestiges remain. Visitors can observe segments of the ancient walls, which delimited the fortress's perimeter, built with local stone masonry. Although much has been lost to time and the action of the elements, the arrangement of the remnants still allows one to intuit the dimension and complexity of the original structure. The foundations of old towers and the layout of interior spaces can be identified, inviting imagination about the military life that unfolded there in past eras.
Beyond its historical and architectural value, the site of Alter Pedroso's fortifications offers a unique experience due to its natural and scenic surroundings. From its highest point, a stunning panoramic view opens up over the typical Alentejo landscape, dotted with cork oak and holm oak groves, and crossed by streams. The breadth of the horizon and the prevailing silence invite contemplation and provide an environment of peace and serenity, where history merges with the region's natural beauty.
