This monument was erected after the Battle of the Lines of Elvas, which took place on January 14, 1659. The battle marked a decisive victory for Portugal during the War of Restoration of Independence.
The Landmark was commissioned by King D. Afonso VI as a way to celebrate the Portuguese victory against the Spanish troops and to honor the soldiers who fought for the independence of Portugal.
The monument is made of white Estremoz marble and consists of a Tuscan column approximately 5 meters high. The column sits on a square base with three steps and is topped by a royal crown.
On the faces of the pedestal, there are inscriptions that describe the battle and pay homage to the heroes who lost their lives in the conflict. The letters are in Roman characters, painted in black.
The Battle of the Lines of Elvas Landmark has been classified as a National Monument since 1910, highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
