Situated in the municipality of Elvas, the Chapel of Our Lady of Aid rests in a rural and isolated setting, south of the city, in the parish area of Assunção, Ajuda, Salvador and Santo Ildefonso. Its position offers an environment of tranquility, next to the Guadiana River, with the historical Bridge of Our Lady of Aid a short distance away, about one hundred meters. The surrounding landscape is marked by nature, with typical low-lying vegetation of the Alentejo region.
This chapel is an example of religious architecture built in the 16th century. Its design incorporates characteristic elements of the Manueline style, which marked the period in the history of Portugal. Since its construction, the temple has been a place dedicated to worship, maintaining its original function throughout the centuries.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Aid remains an important center of faith for the local community, under the auspices of the Catholic Church, through the Diocese of Évora. In recent years, there has been a remarkable revitalization of its traditions, with the return of events such as the Easter Pilgrimage, which brings together faithful in mass and procession. This renewal demonstrates the attachment and collective effort to preserve the religious and cultural roots of the place, contributing to its beautification and the continuity of its celebrations.
