Located in the western part of Funchal, in the parish of São Martinho, Praia Formosa is part of the Areeiro urban area. Its position allows for direct access and facilitates connection to the city, while remaining a vast, easily accessible coastal space. It offers open and wide views of the Atlantic Ocean.
This is the largest public bathing area on Madeira Island, extending for approximately two kilometers. It is not a single beach, but rather a natural complex that encompasses different stretches of coastline. It includes Formosa, Nova, and Namorados beaches, characterized by their dark sand, and Praia do Areeiro, composed of pebbles. This geological diversity offers distinct seaside experiences.
Praia Formosa is a sought-after location for those wishing to enjoy the ocean, whether for a quick swim or to spend a few hours relaxing by the water. Its accessibility, being a public beach with free access, and the assurance of safety, with the presence of lifeguards during the bathing season, make it a reference point for bathers. Its recognition with the Blue Flag attests to the quality of its waters and environment.
To complement the visitor experience, there are several support structures. These include changing rooms for convenience, a first aid post, and areas dedicated to recreational activities, such as a children's playground and a football pitch, which contribute to the well-being of those who frequent the site. The availability of nearby parking facilitates arrival at the beach.
