A Sanctuary of Madeiran Flora

This garden is exclusively dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the island's rich botanical heritage. Within its approximately 2200 square meters, visitors can discover and admire dozens of species of plants native to Madeira. In addition to endemic flora, it is possible to find specimens typical of coastal cliffs, which grow naturally by the sea. It is an opportunity to get to know firsthand the plant biodiversity that makes Madeira so unique.

Origin and Philosophy

The creation of the São Vicente Indigenous Plant Garden dates back to 1989, the result of a pioneering initiative by the 'O Barbusano' Ecology Club, which had the support of the Municipal Council and the World Wide Fund for Nature. The vision behind this project was that of an "ecomuseum," a space designed not only for plant exhibition but also to serve as a center for environmental study and awareness. The fundamental purpose was to educate residents and visitors about the vital importance of preserving the island's native forest, promoting a deeper understanding of the local ecology and the collective responsibility for its safeguarding.
