The Roman Villa of Outeiro de Polima is situated in the Outeiro de Polima area, in the parish of São Domingos de Rana, within the municipality of Cascais. Although located in a predominantly urbanized area, this site serves as a direct point of contact with the past, revealing an important historical heritage in the current landscape.
This archaeological site represents a valuable testimony of Roman occupation in the Iberian Peninsula, with its main period of activity spanning from the 1st to the 6th centuries AD. It is believed that the villa functioned as the heart of an agricultural estate, playing a fundamental role in the region's rural economy. The importance of this site for national heritage is recognized by its classification as a Monument of Public Interest.
The presence of ancient remains in Outeiro de Polima was first recorded at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, successive archaeological campaigns have brought to light various materials that tell the story of life in this villa. Among the most significant findings are fragments of ceramic for domestic and construction use, a hand quern, and a notable collection of loom weights, suggesting the practice of weaving activities. Although some structures, such as an opus signinum floor, have been partially lost over time, the quantity and variety of recovered materials allow researchers and visitors to imagine the daily life and characteristics of this ancient Roman rural dwelling.
