The Chapel of Santa Luzia is located in the area of Fernandinho, an area that is part of the locality of Ventosa, in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Situated in an urban environment, its location allows for easy access, inviting those who explore the region to discover this religious and historical point of interest.
The roots of the Chapel of Santa Luzia extend deep into time, with its exact origins remaining a mystery. However, its historical journey is marked by great antiquity. A significant chapter in its existence was the intervention of 1876, when the chapel, on the verge of ruin, underwent a comprehensive reconstruction, which included the rebuilding of its foundations.
During the major renovation of 1876, the chapel revealed secrets from its past. At the altar, which was originally made of stone, ancient images, also carved in stone, were unearthed. It is believed that these pieces may have been the original representations that adorned the primitive temple. The wooden images currently in the chapel also bear witness to a considerable age. Furthermore, a large frieze was discovered, featuring a sculpture whose meaning is not yet fully known, but which is thought to have been part of the crowning of the first altar, enriching the artistic heritage of the site.
The Chapel of Santa Luzia keeps the community's tradition and faith alive through an annual celebration. On December 13th, the space hosts a festivity that gathers locals and visitors, reaffirming its role as a meeting point and a place of devotion, where history and tradition intertwine.
